Cape Ann Reads Kickoff Event

January 30, 2016 (SAT) 9:30 AM - 4:00PM: The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art will be offering workshops for children and adults to kick-off the new Cape Ann Reads initiative. This program will take place at the Cape Ann Museum and is free and open to the public. Space is limited. Reservations are required; spaces can be reserved by emailing info@capeannmuseum.org, calling (978)283-0455 x10, or online at Eventbrite.

Altered Books Workshop for Teens and Adults

March 23, (WEDS) 6:30 PM: We'll use worn books as our canvas for three dimensional art projects. You may bring your own worn-out book, or use one of older discards for the canvas.

Anita Silvey: Everything I need to Know I Learned from a Children's Book.

April 16th (SAT) From Anita's important book of the same name, this talk will cover the impact of picture books not only as a tool of language and  speech, but ultimately, imagination and empowerment of life choices.

Anita Silvey: The American Picture Book: The Simplest, Subtlest Art Form of Them All

April 16th (SAT). 1:00 at the Rockport Public Library. Beginning with Beatrix Potter and moving to the 21st century, the lecture traces the development of the American picture book and why picture books remain the most important tool we have to develop reading. Registration is not required. ADA accessible.

 

 

Story Flags

April 21st (THURS) 10:00AM: Tell a story with a fabric flag. Participants will create brightly colored flags that tell a personal story to decorate the Sawyer Free Library for Cape Ann Reads. May 12th, (THURS) 6:00PM: Join the TOHP Burnham Library for a presentation from Essex resident, author and singer, songwriter Daisy Nell. She will discuss her creative journey producing  three picture books, Rocky at the Dockside, Stowaway Mouse, and her most recent Tilly the Pirate. TOHP Burnham Library, 245 Western Ave.

Building Poetry with Picture Books

May 21st, (SAT) 9:00 AM- 5:00PM: Visit the Rockport Public Library's table at Motif #1 Day to design, photograph and display poetry created by stacking together picture books. Registration is not required

Saturday Storywalk

June 4th (SAT) 10:00AM-2:00PM: Saturday Storywalk, Take a stroll through Manchester beginning at the Manchester Public Library or Manchester Historical Museum.
Our self guided double Story walk of two great picture books will be available starting at 10 AM and be accessible throughout the day. Picture Book Lovers of all ages are invited to walk, read, and act the route together. Featured books: Stella, the Star of the Sea and Storm Whale. No registration necessary.

Cape Ann Art Haven The Art of Children's Books summer day camp

week of July 4th-8th, 9:00-3:00PM: We are going to be exploring the art within a variety of Caldecott Award Winner children’s books.  Each child will get a to choose from a selection of books, and will spend then examine the artwork involved in the illustrations!  We will be working with pencil, charcoal, markers and more to create our own drawings and illustrations. A Day in Rockport

July 20th, (WED) 2PM: 

A special author / illustrator event! 

Illustrated by The Paper Mermaid's owner Mary Faino, and written by local author S.D. Kelly, this enchanting children's book takes you on an evocative tour of Rockport, Massachusetts.

Poetic text accompanies the lush mix media illustrations. At the end of the book we have added educational information about places pictured in the book.

Join us for a reading, Q&A session, craft, scavenger hunt and story walk.  A celebration of this lovely, local story!

Ed Emberley at Cape Ann Community Cinema & Stage

August 27 (SAT) Come to Cape Ann Community & Stage for an afternoon with acclaimed author illustrator Ed Emberley and his wife Barbara. Emberley has published close to 100 books. He collaborated with his wife on earlier works including the 1968 Caldecott winning Drummer Hoff, and more recent books with his daughter, Rebecca, such as Chicken Little and Red Hen. Captain's Courageous: The Live Experience
